1. Chasing the fruit without an exit
The trap: steering directly toward fruit while ignoring the cells beyond it. The fix: choose the exit first, then decide whether the fruit is safe to approach from this direction. If there is no comfortable continuation, circle around or leave it for later.
2. Looking only at the head
The trap: the head is clear, so the next turn feels safe, but the body occupies the lane you are aiming for. The fix: scan the whole route, including the neck, the tail, and the space between parallel sections of your body.
3. Cutting a corner too tightly
The trap: a sharp turn saves a few cells but puts the head beside its own trail. The fix: use a broad arc when there is room, especially after the snake grows. A predictable loop is easier to adjust than a cramped shortcut.
4. Turning after the opening has passed
The trap: at speed, the input arrives too late and the head moves beyond the gap. The fix: look one or two cells ahead and press the direction before reaching the junction. Practice at a lower starting speed until the timing feels natural.
5. Trusting the tail to move out of the way
The trap: entering a narrow lane because the tail appears close to leaving it. The fix: leave a margin. A fruit pickup adds length, and a small timing error can close the gap you expected to use.
6. Forgetting what the mode changes
The trap: treating every edge as a wall, forgetting that No Walls wraps, or overlooking a block in Obstacles. The fix: name the mode before the run and adjust your mental map. In Rush, plan earlier because the pace rises as you score.
7. Restarting without learning anything
The trap: pressing restart immediately and repeating the same route. The fix: take a second to identify the turn that removed your options. Change one habit on the next run—such as widening turns or checking the far edge—so each attempt teaches you something.
A short reset routine
